Days 1–2: decompress

Offer quiet, predictable care and let the pet choose when to interact.

  • Use one safe room or small area
  • Keep meals and toilet breaks consistent
  • Avoid parties, baths, and crowded outings

Days 3–5: build familiarity

Introduce short, positive activities while protecting rest time.

  • Explore one new area at a time
  • Reward calm behavior
  • Begin gentle handling only when welcomed

Days 6–7: review wellbeing

Look for trends in appetite, sleep, toileting, movement, and comfort.

  • Record questions for a veterinarian
  • Adjust routines slowly
  • Celebrate small signs of trust

Practical checklist

  • Pet is eating and drinking
  • Toileting is monitored
  • Safe space remains available
  • Introductions are supervised
  • Vet plan is scheduled
